Brazil U-17 Crowned Continental Champs

Brazil has taken the crown in Iquique, Chile in the South American qualifiers for the FIFA U-17 World Cup Nigeria 2009 by defeating Argentina in the final.

The match on 9 May finished 2-2 after 90 minutes and Brazil won on penalties 6-5. The qualifiers featured ten countries, including Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru, Venezuela, Chile, Uruguay, Ecuador and Argentina.

Brazil had been leading 2-0 on goals from Zezinho and Coutinho, but Argentina displayed great fortitude and had equalized by the very end through Sebastián González and Esteban Espíndola. Maurucio scored the final penalty to give Brazil the championship.

Colombia and Uruguay each earned victories to claim the final two remaining slots and will join Argentina and Brazil in Nigeria. Adrián Luna's brace and a goal from Gonzalo Barreto powered Uruguay over Ecuador 3-1 to finish the last round on top of the standings with seven points. Ecuador's late consolation goal came from Richard Caicedo.

Bolivia needed a draw to qualify, but they were beaten 2-1 by Colombia. The Bolivians were ahead thanks to a goal from Gilbert Alvarez, but Edwin Cardona and Faider Burbano both scored to book Colombia their passage to Nigeria.
